ASHTANGA YOGA
Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic and physically demanding style of yoga that follows a specific sequence of postures. It was developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and focuses on synchronizing breath with movement to create a flowing practice.
EIGHT LIMBS
The limbs of Ashtanga Yoga, as outlined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, are: Yamas (ethical restraints), Niyamas (observances), Asana (physical postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation) & Samadhi (state of deep absorption or union with the divine)
BENEFITS
Regular practice can enhance strength, flexibility, and endurance. It improves overall body awareness, balance, and posture. Ashtanga Yoga also promotes mental clarity, stress reduction, and a sense of inner peace.
SERIES
Ashtanga Yoga consists of six series, each building upon the previous one. The primary series (Yoga Chikitsa) is the foundational sequence, followed by the intermediate series (Nadi Shodhana), and the advanced series (Sthira Bhaga A, B, C, and D).
SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
While Ashtanga Yoga has roots in traditional spiritual practices, it can be approached from both a physical and spiritual perspective. The focus on breath, movement, and concentration can help cultivate mindfulness and a deeper connection to oneself.
PRIMARY FOCUS
The primary focus of Ashtanga Yoga is on the synchronization of breath (ujjayi pranayama) with a series of progressive and flowing postures (asanas), promoting a meditative state of mind and purification of the body. The Eightfold Path to Wellness
